Grishin brings Belarus first Winter Olympic gold from men's aerials
VANCOUVER, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- Alexei Brishin brought Belarus its first Olympic catalog printing Winter Games gold medal after he claimed victory in the men's freestyle skiing aerials of the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games here on Thursday evening.
After two solid and consistent jumps at the Cyrpress Mountain, Grishin took the title in 248.41 points, beating Jeret Peterson of the United States and Liu Zhongqing of China into second and third places.
It was the first Winter Olympic gold medal for Belarus since his world top-ranked teammate Anton Kushnir failed to qualify for the final while Timofei Slivets and Dmitri Dashinsky were out of medal contention.
The 31-year-old Belarussian said: "I still don't really feel it because I'm still a bit in shock."
"I don't know how to celebrate my victory yet, but it will be a first class celebration. I think all Belarusians are enjoying our success. Every Olympics, we bring home a medal, finally we bring home a gold," Grishin said.
Dmitry Shichko, Belarus chef de mission, said after the men's aerials final that "it's history. Everyone will be happy. There will be cheering, many flowers, a band, paper bag printing an orchestra, music, fans and relatives. The party has already started."
Comparing with Peterson, who has a signature routine "the Hurricane" with the highest degree of difficulty at 4.900 for his second jump, Grishin said he had no other difficult jump for his second attempt which only stands at 4.525 DD.
"Before the last jump, I was up there and said to myself, 'I have to do it'."
"It was a very complicated jump. I didn't have any other option, so I had to jump my second choice. I was taking a chance with this jump," said the three-time Olympian.
Grishin, the brochure printing bronze medalist in 2002 and 4th finisher in 2006 Winter Olympics, said he did not pay attention to the points during the competition.
"To be honest, I wasn't looking at the points, I was looking at the rank. I knew the American bent his knees. I knew he wasn't going to win," Grishin said.
